The VHF must be used correctly. Frequencies are shared and limited and therefore improper use may harm other users of the service. In spite of the incursion of the mobile telephony, the transmitter is still fundamental and an important element of safety.

Some of the most common errors when using VHF equipment are:

Improper use of channel 16. (Emergency Channel)
Do not check if someone is using the call channel when starting our transmission.
3. Do not identify yourself when making a call.
4. Making unnecessary calls or extending communications.
5. Allow unprepared people to use VHF equipment.
6. Speaking very quickly and without clarity.
7. Use inappropriate words (e.g. STOP instead of HERE or NOT instead of NEGATIVE, etc.).
8. Do not spell words that need clarification according to the International Alphabet.International Alphabet.
9. Emit in high power at short distances.
10. Use inappropriate language.

Some advice

Check before leaving that the transmitter is functioning properly (A test to the harbor seamanship may help)
If you have a portable transmitter test its proper operation and battery charging.
Teach other inexperienced crew members the basic use of telecommunication equipment.

If you have to go out to another port make sure the communications channel they use. Generally ports have channel 9, but this is not the case for all of them.

If you sail regularly, having your own portable transmitter can be very useful. Prices have been reduced and performance and duration have improved. If you make the investment, it is appropriate for the portable transmitter to be submersible.
